The Aspen Professional Ski Patrol Association – a non-affiliated union – supports the teachers, fire fighters, police officers, and other Wisconsin state workers in their struggle for basic workplace rights.
Collective bargaining rights are a hallmark of free society. Democracies tolerate and even encourage them. Look at any democratic state: Canada, Argentina, the United Kingdom, Germany, South Korea, Australia, and you’ll find a government that allows its citizens to organize in the workplace. Now consider totalitarian countries like China, Cuba, Myanmar, where unions are forbidden, or severely curtailed. No freedom, no unions. The two go hand in hand, always.
Unionized Wisconsin state workers made clear their willingness to make the financial sacrifices that Governor Walker demanded. Yet by rejecting the unions’ capitulation and instead choosing to outlaw public sector unions, the governor and the legislature have made clear their real intentions—to bust the unions. This isn’t about saving taxpayer dollars; it’s about getting rid of organized labor forever.
The Aspen Professional Ski Patrol Association urges you, the good citizens of the state of Wisconsin, to continue to make your voices heard. Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak couldn’t govern without the consent of the governed, and neither can Governor Walker. Keep the faith. Carry on. You know it’s the right thing to do.
